Whenever a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
