British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he said. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
